Confronted with the SARS-CoV-2 crisis, we had to cancel the 25th edition of the festival in May 2020, including this project.


Hana Miletić is an astute observer of social realities that often go unnoticed on the streets. With an eye for the prevailing scarcity and neglect, she explores the city and its migration-formed communities. She makes connections between what we pay attention to and our ideas about value. The influence of street photography is never far off, and her education in art history and gender studies is also reflected in her work. This takes various forms, from sculptures and textiles to poetry and performance. At WIELS, Miletić exhibits work that departs from a feminist perspective on labour and care, such as a series of hand-woven textile works. She studies how certain tasks conventionally assigned to women and/or migrants are undervalued in patriarchal, capitalist societies, and introduces this issue in collaborative programmes comprising of lectures, performances, film screenings, and workshops. The reading group Knowledge Is A Does, including Miletić, presents an evening for theory and poetry called Disassemblies in the Beursschouwburg. Besides, Miletić facilitates two workshops at WIELS, together with the open arthouse Globe Aroma.

Disassemblies 07 – Dependencies in the Plenum

We are grappling with separations both physical and structural. We are feeling around for ways of knowing without thought, time, or space. This Disassemblies is a collective writing and reading of visitor guides and theory refracted into poetry and gesture: to be performed with guests near and remote.

The point of departure is the exhibition Dependencies, at WIELS for which artist Hana Miletić worked with three groups: a group of women from Globe Aroma who made felt and wrote poetry together, a local weaving studio (Academy of Visual Arts Anderlecht), and the reading/writing group Knowledge Is A Does (KIAD). This particular event departs from the reading of two essays: Denise Ferreira da Silva's Toward a Black Feminist Poethics and Sara Ahmed's Collective Feelings. Or, The Impressions Left by Others.

For Disassemblies 07 members from KIAD developed a program with confidantes and conspirators some of whom have asked to remain anonymous in solidarity with those illegalized and racialized within colonial institutions.

Knowledge is a Does (KIAD) started as a socially concerned reading group at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Spring 2014. The original members are Alexis Blake, E.C. Feiss, Toon Fibbe, Ilke Gers, Conny Karlsson Lundgren, Hana Miletić, Karisa Senavitis, Kym Ward, and Katharina Zimmerhackl. The group draws its name from an essay of Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, the American literary critic and scholar, most well known for her work in forming the discipline of queer theory. Kosofsky Sedgwick’s articulation of the concept of “reparative reading” came to structure what and how KIAD reads. Without naming their practice as such, KIAD undertakes various kinds of “reparative reading” together, and tries to develop a form of study – of what they read, of the institutional politics around them, and of themselves, that goes beyond a critical deconstruction/paranoid reading. KIAD continues, in new and distant constellations, to come together to make sense of what unfolds today: the ascendency of the far right in America and Europe, the two continents where they live.

Disassemblies is a series of disparate events programmed by KIAD developed to explore the questions generated from KIAD’s readings within new settings. Former events include film screenings, poetry readings, a lecture/tarot reading, a “Hate Party”, a publication/symposium, and performances. Happenings took place in artist-run spaces, a private living room, a LGBTIQ bar, a thrift shop, and a gymnasium. Past guests/contributors include Hannah Black, Valentina Desideri, DJ NOGOOD/SUPER, Egbert Alejandro Martina, Lisa Robertson, Denise Ferreria da Silva, Stikstof, Marina Vishmidt, YOUTUBE LADS, and Simone Zeefuik, amongst others.

Heleen Debeuckelaere is a historian and writer. She focuses her work on Afrophobia, dekolonial thinking and all things Afrobeat.

Johanna Hedva is a fourth-generation Los Angelena on their mother’s side and, on their father’s side, the grandchild of a woman who escaped from North Korea. Hedva is the author of the novel, On Hell (2018, Sator Press). Their work has been shown at Machine Project, Human Resources LA, the Getty’s 2013 Pacific Standard Time, the LA Architecture and Design Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art on the Moon. Their fiction, essays, and poems have appeared in Triple Canopy, The White Review, Black Warrior Review, Entropy, Mask, 3:AM, and others. Their ongoing project on ableism, This Earth, Our Hospital, includes the essays "Sick Woman Theory" and "Letter to a Young Doctor."

Ibrahim Khayar is a medical student at Université Catholique de Louvain in Belgium and a student organiser. He is an active member of his student union and helped launch Rise Up, a platform in support of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions movement (BDS) on his campus. In his free time, he researches Marxist, postcolonial and queer theory, all of which he links to his activism. He also volunteers at community activist hub Le Space in Brussels.

Bouchra Lamsyeh is a “cultural intervener”. She holds a Master in and Public International Law (Université Paris 8). Recently she starred in the movies Le Chant des hommes (Bénédicte Liénard, 2015), A l'arraché / Snatched (Emmanuelle Nicot, 2015) and Majnouna (Max Waubb, 2017). She often performs as a DJ.

Shilemeza Prins was trained as a nurse in South Africa (Universiteit van Kaapstad). She currently works for 11.11.11, the coalition of NGOs, unions, movements and various solidarity groups in Flanders and Brussels that supports development initiatives in the Global South by lobbying national and international governments and organizations. Shilemeza has been writing poetry since 2005. She uses her writing to express her thinking and feeling about society. In 2018, together with Mimouna Amri and other women from Globe Aroma, she initiated the all-female band Ladyvines.
