Director Martine Wijckaert has produced a tableau of a family, based on Shakespeare's Kings. Revolving around the Plantagenet line and its rival houses of York and Lancaster, it is the tale of the transition of an archaic and metaphysical world into a political and bourgeois one. Above all, it is about the loss of the soul on the altar of material gain. England, described by John of Gaunt, the first of the Lancasters, as "this precious stone set in the silver sea", changes into the "kingdom for a horse" of Richard III, the last of the Yorks. The action takes place between 1413 and 1485, 72 years of war, murder and loss (of meaning), which Wijckaert has re-written and condensed, like a theory of the origin of the universe, into four days and three nights.
