During her stay in Japan ten years ago, Kuwaiti artist Monira Al Qadiri was introduced to a woman who practised Japanese necromancy. A reading of her soul revealed that Al Qadiri is carrying 40 spirits of her Saudi ancestors with her. These bearded men are attached to her body and bring a bloody past with them. They consider Monira as their tribal leader, devote themselves to her life and wish to die with her. In Phantom Beard, Al Qadiri interprets this remarkable story as a way of connecting the past, present and future of the Middle East, and to question the complexity of gender in an ironic manner. The performance fills the holes in the story of the region: its local history, its current, destroyed state, and its unknown, science fiction-like future. In a mysterious and stimulating blend of butoh dance, music, animation, poetry and performance, Al Qadiri faces up to her spirits with complete dedication. Phantom Beard takes its place in a layered interdisciplinary practice that refuses to be pigeonholed.
