The Swiss director Christoph Marthaler made his noteworthy début with Murx... at the Volksbühne in Berlin in 1993. Marthaler's stage world is a waiting room where the clock has stopped; eleven men and women sit at tables. It is only when they sing that there arises a feeling of their belonging together. The beauty of this musical harmony is ambiguous: the songs that Marthaler uses belong to the repertoire of German heimat songs. He stabs subtly at the banality and the dangers of a narrow-minded existence. With Murx... he holds up a mirror not only to the German public, but to all of us.
