She had dreamed about it for a long time and both the Festival and La Monnaie encouraged her to act on her dreams. Having worked on Bach’s Musical offering (M.O), created for the 1996 kunstenFESTIVALdesArts, Trisha Brown is now taking on her first major opera, L’Orfeo, by Monteverdi and Alessandro Striggio. Written in Mantua in 1607 the first great opera in the history of music the work stands out as a magnificent fusion of song and instrumental music, treated equally for the first time."I feel as free from convention as Striggio and Monteverdi", says the American choreographer.

For L’Orfeo, she carefully studied the poetic metre and the musical instrumentation, along with the ramifications of the myth and its social context. She has worked to unite dance, text and music: the singers will move to it, immersed in the work's dynamic fluidity. René Jacobs will direct the score in complete harmony with this choreographer of the abstract. Trisha will reveal for the first time the movement that is implied by the emotions in this tale and music.
