Performed here for the first time in French, the explosive text of The Europeans, by English contemporary playwright Howard Barker, fell by chance into the hands of Armel Roussel, a young director of angry and celebratory theatre. After Koltès' Roberto Zucco, he is now staging this brutal, disturbing play. Ignoring the historical context (the invasion of Austria by the Turks in the seventeenth century), he concentrates on the human and political ambiguities. The result is a performance that pricks our conscience and gives us pleasure, and in which violence reveals itself as a peace-maker.
