-60% subsidy = -60% culture
We would like to express our solidarity with the artists who are severely affected by cuts of 60% on project subsidies in Flanders, as well as with the Flemish civil society, VRT and the cultural sector who’ll be demonstrating today.
The savings made by the Flemish government also hit the Kunstenfestivaldesarts. Not only will our resources be reduced by 6%, but we’re also presenting many artists from Brussels and Flanders for whom project subsidies are vital. Sixty percent less resources means sixty percent less culture.
We’re still looking for solutions, and although we can’t absorb the impacts of such a large budgetary saving, we’ll make an additional effort for the most severely affected artists. This will be done by protecting our artistic budget as much as possible and by providing additional resources to artists who, despite very good evaluations, no longer receive grants.
And with the help of the Friends of the festival, a fund will be set up through which we’ll directly finance artistic projects.
Various protests are also organized: we encourage everyone to go there, we will be there ourselves! Let us fight together and in solidarity for a healthy cultural sector in a society where living together has become a crucial issue.

Outcome Kunstenfestivaldesarts 2019
The 24th edition of Kunstenfestivaldesarts finishes today and was in many respects an exceptional and more than successful edition. In total, more than 34,000 participants in the festival were counted, all activities combined (performances, encounters, Free School, parties, Through the festival). Let’s take a look back.
Box office hits
Some prime international productions attracted a wide audience and were received with great admiration and interest. The festival opened with two intimate and moving encounters: one with Trajal Harrell in his new solo Dancer of the Year, and one with the musical oeuvre of Hildegard von Bingen, magisterially embodied by François Chaignaud and Marie-Pierre Brébant in Symphonia Harmoniæ Cælestium Revelationum. The dance performance CRIA by Brazilian choreographer Alice Ripoll and her Cia Suave also left a deep impression. Together with Anne Teresa and Jolente de Keersmaeker, the international group of students from P.A.R.T.S. gave a breathtaking night-time performance of Somnia in the park of Gaasbeek Castle for the closing performance.
This year, the festival also paid a lot of attention to promising young makers. Silke Huysmans and Hannes Dereere made their successful festival debut with Pleasant Island, a topical documentary theatre performance. Thai theatre-maker Wichaya Artamat was also highly successful with the compelling This Song Father Used to Sing (Three Days in May). At WIELS, the South Korean Geumhyung Jeong presented Rehab Training, an intriguing performance that highlighted an uncanny relationship with a lifeless mannequin. And during the three weeks of the festival, the rich video work of Basir Mahmood could be admired in Cinema Galeries in the exhibition I watch you do. Topical and pressing
Against the background of the (European) elections and the materialization of sociopolitical extremes in various parts of the world, this year's festival made room for a number of socially or politically engaged projects. The essayistic film The Body's Legacies Pt. 2: The Postcolonial Body by Kader Attia touched on the issue of racial discrimination of the body in an inimitable way. Brazilian choreographer Lia Rodrigues did not shun the complexity of being other with the impressive Fúria. With the multi-installation Liquid Violence, Forensic Oceanography uncompromisingly revealed the deadly truth behind the European migration policy in the Mediterranean. And Faustin Linyekula brought the gruesome genesis of the Congo to the stage in Congo. Each of these projects left a deep impression on the audience.
A new centre and new partners
For the first time, the festival moved its Festival Centre beyond the boundaries of the so-called 'city centre'. Across the canal, in Rue de Manchesterstraat in Molenbeek, the festival found a challenging but inspiring base for meetings, activities, the Free School and parties: the new site of Recyclart and De Vaartkapoen. This unique location made it possible to create a mix of different audiences and attracted many curious visitors. In addition, the past three weeks of the festival have shown that the district has great potential for the future, partly thanks to its proximity to other sociocultural partners such as Charleroi danse / La Raffinerie, Decoratelier and Cinemaximilaan.
This year, the festival also visited a number of other new locations, with the aim of pushing back cultural boundaries and sharing the artistic programme with as many Brussels residents as possible through new collaborations. We were given a warm welcome at Le Lac, Théâtre des Martyrs, the community centre Tour à Plomb and GC De Kriekelaar.
Halfway through the festival, the Festival Centre was transformed for a week into a Free School collective discussions, meetings and workshops. With a total of 1060 participants, this first edition of the Free School was a great success. We are therefore already looking forward to next year's edition.
The next (25th!) edition of Kunstenfestivaldesarts will take place from Friday 8 to Saturday 30 May 2020.
Practical information Somnia / PARTS at the Castle of Gaasbeek
Following up to the premiere of Somnia (P.A.R.T.S. / Anne Teresa & Jolente De Keersmaeker) we would like to share the following information with you:
The performance starts at 20:00 at the Castle of Gaasbeek (a 10 minute walk from the parking) and is estimated to last until 23:30. Please arrive on time.
- Address: Rue du Château 40, 1750 Lennik
- Parking address: Rue du Château 34, 1750 Lennik (opposite the Krijmerie van Gaasbeek)
The performance is a walk through the castle’s park and forest. There may be puddles or mud, so make sure to wear suitable footwear.
Also, keep in mind that it can get cold in the park in the evening. We advise you to bring warm clothes. Furthermore, the use of umbrellas is not allowed (causing reduced visibility) so we ask you to provide appropriate clothing for the rain.
There is no cloakroom.
In the castle there is a bar, where you can buy drinks and some refreshments. The bar is open during the performance and only cash is accepted.
Out of respect for the artists, the public and nature, the use of mobile phones and cameras during the show is not permitted.
Also note that walking in the dark is part of the experience. For this reason, we ask you not to use flashlights or other light sources to light your way during the show. Our volunteers will be there to help you if necessary.
The shuttle bus between Brussels-Central and Gaasbeek is fully booked on 29, 30, 31 May and 1 June. For people with a ticket for the shuttle bus, here is some information:
- Departure direction Gaasbeek at 18:30 at Rue de Loxum (Brussels-Central). Please arrive on time with your ticket.
- Departure towards Brussels (Rue de Loxum) half an hour after the performance. Meeting in the parking lot of the Castle of Gaasbeek.

Symphonia Hildegardia: four podcasts about Hildegard von Bingen
We made our first podcasts! Through the series Symphonia Hildegardia, four voices narrate Hildegard von Bingen's living memory in four episodes of around ten minutes each. Initiated by Symphonia Harmonyæ Cælestium Revelationum, the new work of François Chaignaud and Marie-Pierre Brébant, the podcasts immerse us in a faraway world which is radically in dialogue with our own.
