Frie Leysen et Christophe Slagmuylder awarded at the Prix de la Critique
Every year, cultural journalists honour performances, directors, actors and actresses, set designers and technicians with the Prix de la Critique, awarded to productions created during the previous cultural season in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.
Frie Leysen and Christophe Slagmuylder have been awarded the very special Bernadette Abraté Award. This award honours the influence of a performing arts personality.

Fantastic news: we now have a trio of directors!
The board of directors of the Kunstenfestivaldesarts has appointed Sophie Alexandre, Daniel Blanga Gubbay and Dries Douibi as successors of Christophe Slagmuylder at the head of the festival. The board of directors has withheld the artistic project of Daniel Blanga Gubbay and Dries Douibi, who will join Sophie Alexandre as directors. The trio will write the third chapter of the Kunstenfestivaldesarts, together with the strong, permanent team, that is pleased with the decision.
The appointment is a conscious and deliberate choice in favour of a new model of direction, supported by the three directors, who have complementary profiles: Sophie Alexandre’s network in Brussels, Daniel Blanga Gubbay’s international profile and artistic vision, and Dries Douibi’s experience with and involvement in the artistic scene of Brussels as a dramaturg.
The project of Daniel Blanga Gubbay and Dries Douibi has been selected for its radical artistic vision and artist-based approach. They propose to rethink the festival’s relation with the city and to refresh its involvement on a local level, while connecting with international networks and unusual creation contexts. The project is the basis for renewing and deepening the festival's vision, without losing its continuity out of sight. Thanks to a broad network of partners, the festival will encounter new and various audiences.
The board of directors was supported in its decision by a jury of experts, consisting of Mette Edvardsen (artist), Zoë Gray (senior curator WIELS), Lars Kwakkenbos (lecturer KASK), Laurence Rassel (director ERG) and Annemie Vanackere (intendant Hebbel am Ufer).
Together with the directional shift, the festival’s board of directors gets two new presidents: Bie Vancraeynest and Anne Hislaire are succeeding Marion Hänsel and Geert Van Istendael.
The new direction will now begin with the completion of the artistic programme of the festival’s 24th edition, taking place in 2019 from May 10 to June 1.

Thank you and see you soon, Christophe Slagmuylder!
Today is Christophe Slagmuylder's last day with us. After 12 years at the helm of the festival, he will leave for Vienna where he'll start as the new Artistic Director of the Wiener Festwochen from Monday 3 September.
A new artistic direction for the Kunstenfestivaldesarts will be designated in September.
Christophe Slagmuylder will lead the Wiener Festwochen 2019
Christophe Slagmuylder, general and artistic director of the Kunstenfestivaldesarts, becomes the artistic director of the Wiener Festwochen.
The internationally renowned festival will take place in Vienna from 10 May to 16 June 2019. Christophe Slagmuylder will be taking up his new post on 1 September. At the same time, he will be leaving the Kunstenfestivaldesarts, which he has led since 2007.
This appointment accelerates the search of a successor to Christophe Slagmuylder as artistic director of the Kunstenfestivaldesarts. The new director will enter office as soon as possible after summer, even though most of the 2019 programme is already defined. The nominated successor will be announced early September.
It will also be the moment to look back on the 12 years during which Christophe Slagmuylder has been the head of the festival, and to take stock of his exceptional programming in Brussels.
This was 4-26.5.2018
The 23rd Kunstenfestivaldesarts drew to a close in Brussels on Saturday 26 May. Almost 40 works created by artists from all over the world have invigorated Brussels, stimulating debates and conversations, workshops and parties.
With an occupancy rate close to 98% (and more than 26,500 tickets sold), one can only acknowledge that the festival gathers large audiences from Brussels and further afield around demanding artistic projects that attempt to avoid a particular format.
We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all those who have “made” this 2018 festival with us: the artists, the partners, and the audiences.
Kunstenfestivaldesarts 2019 will take place from the 10th of May till the 1st of June, 2019.
See you next year!
