Young Art Reporters

The Kunstenfestivaldesarts and De Veerman are running a mixed media project for young people from Brussels for the first time. Starting in April, a team of young people aged between 16 and 22 will meet frequently to discuss the artistic programme and create reactions to it through different mixed media (such as videos, texts etc.), being coached along the way by several media and communication professionals.

Indiscipline: Brussels, the multifaceted and interdisciplinary capital, comes to light in Paris

Over the weekend of the 3rd and 4th September 2016, more than 30 artists, comprising visual artists, performers, choreographers and video makers based in Brussels, will be invited to the Palais de Tokyo by Indiscipline, selected by a curatorial team of WIELS, Kunstenfestivaldesarts and the Wallonie-Bruxelles Théâtre/Danse agency. Coming from around 15 different countries, these artists will present works from diverse crossover disciplines, pushing a number of our symbolic, physical, cultural and linguistic boundaries.

Within the space of a few years, Brussels has turned into an international platform dedicated to emerging artists and to artistic experimentation. Artists from all around the world gather there to find a breeding ground in which to showcase their talents. Characterised by their artistic risks, local artists don’t seem to share any common ground, other than their undisciplined nature and their interdisciplinary bias.

Indiscipline is an initiative of the Minister of Promotion of Brussels Mr Rachid Madrane, carried out by in collaboration with WIELS, Kunstenfestivaldesarts and Wallonie-Bruxelles Théâtre/Danse.

In retrospect

The 21st Kunstenfestivaldesarts draws to a close in Brussels on Saturday 28 May 2016. For three weeks the festival has welcomed a wide range of artistic propositions, mostly world premieres of new works, along with numerous other activities that provide an opportunity for artists and audiences to meet and exchange ideas. Highlights this year include relevant and innovative projects that have been illuminated by the presence of remarkable artists such as Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Milo Rau. These projects have been shared with a wide audience from Brussels, Belgium and elsewhere. This diversity can also be found in the people who come to the festival: contemporary arts enthusiasts alongside the uninitiated, professionals alongside individuals from all kinds of environments who are attracted by the festival’s open-minded and daring approach. In May 2016 the Kunstenfestivaldesarts has reaffirmed its unique position. It combines local roots with a national identity. It combines presenting a demanding and bold artistic programme and sharing it with a wide and diverse audience. Yet again this year ticket sales have exceeded the previous year’s figures (which was a record at the time!) while the various free activities organised in parallel with the festival (parties, debates and exhibitions) have also attracted a large number of visitors. Many thanks to all those who help bring this project to life and share with us the need for artistic creation.

Escape from Caveland!

The Kunstenfestivaldesarts is almost over. Very soon Welcome to Caveland! will disappear again into the underground. On Saturday 28 May the gates to the cave will be open for one last time for a spectacular concert by Philippe Quesne and his band of moles. The concert starts at 11pm at Les Brigittines. Everyone is welcome.

Chicago project

For the fifth year in a row, youth centre Chicago and the Kunstenfestivaldesarts are running the Chicago project. Accompanied by members of the Kunstenfestivaldesarts and the youth centre, a group of youngsters attends several festival performances with their cameras in hand. They record each other’s expectations and reactions, edit the material into video clips, and share these online. But the heated discussions about the performances continue long after the cameras have been stuffed back into their backpacks. You can now watch the first video report about their visit to Alessandro Sciarroni’s Aurora at Halles de Schaerbeek on our Vimeo page. On the final day of the festival, the youngsters will share their experiences with the audience during a public presentation at Les Brigittines.

Programme Reflection Day #3

The full programme of the third and last reflection day at Les Brigittines is now online. The final reflection day takes place on Saturday 21 May at Les Brigittines. It explores the topic of traces of excess, with interventions by Sarah Vanhee, Vincent Meessen, SPEAP, James Rubin and Philippe Quesne. Click here for an overview of the programme.

Takao Kawaguchi premiere moved to 15 May

The premiere of Takao Kawaguchi’s About Kazuo Ohno, initially scheduled for Saturday 14 May at 20:30 at the Bâtiment Dynastie, is moved to Sunday 15 May at 17:00.

Due to changes in the programme of The Pride Festival in Brussels, several activities will take place in and around the Mont des Arts on Saturday 14 May. Creating good conditions for both the public and the performers is a priority for the Kunstenfestivaldesarts, and therefore we have decided to reschedule the premiere of About Kazuo Ohno on Sunday 15 May at 17:00. All ticket holders will be personally contacted by our box office. A limited amount of tickets to the premiere and other dates of About Kazuo Ohno has been put on sale again. Click here for more info.
