Damascus was described by the Prophet as a paradise which had to be forgotten as there can be only one Paradise and it is not of this world. Today, it is known as the "shattered mirror of the Middle East". With no money, Hakim Marzougui and Roula Fattal have formed the Masrah el Rassif or Pavement Theatre, a fragile barque next to the cargo ship of the dominant National Theatre of Damascus. This Tunisian man and Syrian woman wanted a space to talk about nights on the fringe and about the unveiled night in a veiled society. The Festival is co-producing their new play, Thakeret – Arramad (Memory from the ashes) that is sweet yet violent, tender yet desperate. Using perfumed images, it tells of the dreams – since destroyed by fire – of a lush oasis which was Damascus long ago.
