Following on directly from his recent Faust and from HMA/Hiroshima mon amour, which was performed at the last Festival, director Guy Cassiers continues his exploration of theatrical language. He has isolated words, images, sounds and acting, amplifying their autonomy to allow the audience to make up their own story from them. This research has led to the even more radical approach he adopts with Gerardjan Rijnders' Rotjoch, in which everything starts from the text: the audience reads it on a screen and hears it from the mouth of one actor. Hand in hand with Guy Cassiers' work, this technique is used to enter the fragmented soul of a young boy "joch" whom the world has made rotten "rot" because he could not understand it.
