"Remember this. Man's life resembles the string of a musical instrument. When it is taut you can play well. And when you have played well, that is the essence of life." That is the wisdom of the contemporary Chinese fable which inspired composer Qu Xiao-song for his opera Life on a String. In it, he mixes his Eastern heritage with influences from his classical training to create incredible music where the sounds of the Chinese lute and the violin combine until they become one another, where the voice modulates in the tonalities of all possible songs and where the restraint of the sounds opens up to the intensity of the two worlds. That is why the Festival has invited a Western artist to direct this Chinese opera. Ingrid von Wantoch Rekowski, together with fourteen musicians from the Nieuw Ensemble Amsterdam and singer Gong Dong-jian, who is performing all the roles in the fable, will explore the score's theatricality to offer the audience the living string on which this opera vibrates.
