He devises “a laminated
transparency, theatre with charcoal, fade-ins and fade-outs.”
After co-writing the screenplay of Chantal Akerman’s
La Captive, Eric De Kuyper is creating a stage version of it,
putting it in context with the film and its source: The Captive,
volume V of Marcel Proust’s Remembrance of Things Past.
In this version the screen glides towards the stage so that the
drama can be written on it. A Proust specialist, De Kuyper sets
down his pages on the lips of the characters Albertine and Marcel,
as well as on the tulles bordering the space in which the acting
occurs. It is a space expanding into extreme depths so that foundering
in it are Les intermittences du coeur (The Intermittences
of the Heart) of this ‘amorous prisoner’ who turns
his love into ‘his captive’.
