A Festival of the arts, in the plural
Wij kiezen kunstenaars, geen producties (We choose the artists, not the productions De Financieel Economische Tijd, 29/4/98) is Festival director Frie Leysen's leitmotif. The Festival is about allowing the audience to share the story or stories of the artist, rooted in contemporary society, using theatre, dance, music, opera, cinema, video or the plastic arts. The Festival does not hide its preference for projects which combine more than one discipline and which take a slightly alternative approach.
Big names rub shoulders with new talent. It is the quality of their work which matters. For example, in 1998 the American choreographer Trisha Brown put on the world première of Monteverdi's opera L'Orfeo at La Monnaie opera house, while the first full-length film by the young Brussels film-maker Ana Torfs was shown at the Cinéma Nova, just 100 metres along the same street. |
