In Frankenstein-project by theatre and film director Kornél Mundruczó, a casting session is organised in a dingy prefabricated building. Many candidates are dismissed as unsuitable, until the arrogant director’s eye falls on a mysterious young man, who it later appears is not the person who was announced… Just like Frankenstein, the protagonist of Mary Shelley’s famous novel, the characters in Frankenstein-project also create their own monsters. Mundruczó questions the dominance of the majority. We live in a society where anything that doesn’t conform to the general rules is seen as abnormal. To what extent do we allow ourselves to be influenced by this? His tense intrigue is set on the edges of society and thematises our hypocrisy: we are fascinated by the woman with three breasts but look the other way if we see a beggar. The Hungarian plays a dangerous game with the boundaries between fiction and reality, unmasks the (self-created) demons of his characters and draws the spectator into their murky private worlds…
