Eutopia is a quest, on a grand scale, for the identity of Europe – geographic, political, cultural and ideological – which is transposed directly into visual art. The ultimate aim of Eutopia is to build a house in the European District in Brussels. The artistarchitect Filip Berte converted a caravan into a mobile reception room and probed the “European consciousness” of people from every level of society. Together with stories from the media and the NGO sector, their statements form the building blocks of this “House of Eutopia”. In May 2009 he will already be presenting the first two rooms. Protected Landscape – intended for the ground floor – is an installation that depicts the way we deal with borders, security and migration. Collective Memory Mass Grave is the second room and will be in the cellar. As the foundation of the house it occupies a crucial position in the project as a whole. The cellar embodies the theme of the collective memory of Europe. It will be created during the Kunstenfestivaldesarts. Filip Berte can be seen at work and will be only too happy to talk about his project.
