“If you don’t trust the monkey, you create a monkey without trust.”
The title of Smatch refers to the power of the self-fulfilling prophecy, whereby expectations and prejudices influence reality to such an extent that they make themselves true. The Liège actress and theatre-maker Dominique Roodthooft thinks that our society is pervaded by this phenomenon. Her creation is a highly personal response to the despondency and impotence she observes every day. It is a protest against the one-sided and dark discourse of philosophers and opinion makers and against the ease with which their negativity influences our society. But this does not mean that Dominique Roodthooft gives us a straightforwardly cheerful evening. In Smatch – a contraction of the verbs “to smash” and “to match” – reflection and lightheartedness are equal partners. Roodthooft combines anecdote with philosophy, and poetry with politics. She has surrounded herself with sociologists, video artists and theatre-makers and creates a “soirée composée” in which we hear a new and well-nuanced story.
