Vienna, circa 1900. Arthur Schnitzler causes an uproar among the bourgeoisie with the publication of Reigen (La Ronde), in which the Austrian writer reveals the moral hypocrisy of Viennese society in ten love scenes. A prostitute, a count, a soldier, a poet: all layers of society get their come-uppance in this harsh denunciation of the incestuous relations between sex and power. Schnitzler’s material is right up the alley of writer/director Mpumelelo Paul Grootboom, who is known for his raw portraits of life in South African townships. Foreplay is a free adaptation of Schnitzler’s most famous work, a playful performance in which suggestive and incisive dialogues force the most unyielding characters to give in to carnal delights. As in the Vienna of Freud, so too in the Pretoria of today is the merry-go-round of desire a metaphor for the power relations and taboos underlying society everywhere.
