“In Paris, everyone wants to be an actor; no one is satisfied with the role of spectator” (Jean Cocteau). “If everyone were dancing, who would be left to watch?” (Cameroonian proverb). “Can theatre exist without an audience? You need at least one spectator to be able to call something a performance” (Jerzy Grotowski).

Jérôme Bel is a choreographer and dancer. In Pichet Klunchun and myself (Kunstenfestivaldesarts 2005) he confronted the spectators with all the clichés of intercultural dialogue; his The show must go on was a worldwide hit. But Jérôme Bel is also a spectator, and has been for a long time. In Un spectateur he becomes a storytelling virtuoso, guiding us through the viewing experiences that have taught him the “basics” of the performing arts, and that have influenced him the most as a spectator.
