After their success with The Woman who walked into doors (2001) composer Kris Defoort and director Guy Cassiers are once again collaborating on an opera. Their starting point is House of the Sleeping Beauties by the Japanese Nobel Prize-winner Yasunari Kawabata (1899-1972). The book describes the seven nightly visits by the old man Eguchi to an unusual but gentle brothel where older men can cuddle up to the warm bodies of young girls sedated by sleeping pills; a story about farewells, old age and death. Central to this creation is the voice as instrument: a chorus of four female voices, a soprano and a baritone shape the different characters in the story. While the bedroom functions as a lyrical space, the dialogues are spoken by an actress and an actor in the brothel’s front room. Inside and outside, sung and spoken: two melancholy worlds that differ in colour, intensity and emotionality. In House of the Sleeping Beauties, Guy Cassiers succeeds once again in combining the bigger picture with aesthetics and deeply human themes…
