Antonia Baehr “laughs a lot”. People often tell her that her laughter is instantly recognisable, part and parcel of her identity. A transgender personality in life and in her artistic work, this Berlin resident will present the result of a vast research project on laughter. The show explores the sound and form of laughter, its choreography and staging, its rhythm and gestures. But it’s also a “self-portrait through the eyes and the perception of others”. The artist asked her friends and family to compose “scores of laughter” centred on the act of laughing, and not on the desire to be funny. On stage, she interprets these protean scripts. Through their multiplication, she gradually alienates herself from her own laughter and, in so doing, from one of the main aspects of her identity. Comedy is not the aim, but contagion is an unavoidable side effect. A game of distorting mirrors, aimed at distorting laughter.
