After training on the modern and postmodern stages of New York, Yasmeen Godder returned to her native Israel over ten years ago, where she has since developed an incisive choreographic work which, through a very physical approach to bodies, echoes contemporary politics and culture. Her latest work deals with the body as a socially constructed space. Singular Sensation reveals the tension between the inevitable temptation to please and the desire to construct a unique and real identity.
Five dancers enter a white, empty stage, which slowly becomes loaded with ambiguity, a space of struggle with the other and with oneself. Poised between artifice and authenticity, at times seductive and at times angry, Godder’s impassioned
dance opens up a world of sensations and interpretations that confronts the spectator with his own socially-conditioned beliefs. “Everything I create is meant to trigger emotions, situations and images which are sometimes difficult to handle,
whether for myself or the audience.”
