What can optimism mean in today’s world? In An Anthology of Optimism, the philosopher, writer and theatre-maker Pieter De Buysser and writer and theatremaker Jacob Wren ask themselves this question. Refusing to choose between undiluted
pessimism and naïve-sounding optimism, the duo goes in search of a third way: a possibility of critical optimism for the twenty-first century. In a letter to thinkers, artists, scientists, politicians and businessmen, they asked what optimism
could mean in the year 2009. Yves Desmet, Tim Etchells, Guy Verhofstadt and many others sent in their answers in the form of a text, a picture, an object, a piece of music or a drawing. An Anthology of Optimism is a dialogue between De Buysser and Wren in which they go in search of their own definition of critical optimism. In between, they present a selection of the many contributions they received. The complete collection can be found at www.anthologyofoptimism.com.
